Press Releases and Social Media

While doing some research I found that PR Newswire is now using Facebook and Twitter as places to post press releases. I found this very interesting since I knew it was only a matter of time, but I had not heard about it. There has been a lot of success with getting more views, 70% more views that is. Facebook is used most often for sharing press releases, even though Twitter drives 30% more views.
I found this extremely interesting because it is a great idea. By making things easy for people, people are more inclined to do things, so by posting a press release of a news story on Facebook and Twitter where people are already going on to find out what is going on in their friends and family's lives they now can find out when their favorite company is coming out with a new product, or hosting an event. Press releases available on social media is a great idea and is proven to work, but how will this affect journalism?

  1. I agree that press releases on social media is a great idea. The idea that I don't have to actually search for a release and something as simple as following a company will make my search much easier is great.
As far as Journalism goes, I don't really think it will hurt. At the end of the day we still need the journalists to write the compelling unbiased stories. People know that public relations representatives are advocates and journalists are necessary to give stories credibility. The idea that press releases are on social media simply makes journalists jobs a bit easier. Instead of making calls to find press releases, they can easily find it themselves and maybe even stumble across other press releases in the process.
Press releases on social media seems like a win win to me :)

  2. I agree that press releases on social media is a great idea. Being able to just follow a company will make it so much easier in finding out whats going on with that company. Regarding to journalism, i don't think it will affect it, because no how much social media grows we still need journalists to write unbiased stories. I feel that having press releases on social media sites actually make it easier for journalist to write their stories, because the information come write to them.
